THE FARM-TO-TABLE PROGRAM is a partnership between Headwaters, Rappahannock County Public Schools, and other community organizations including the Rappahannock County Farm Bureau, the Young Farmland Fund, The Lapham Family and Sunnyside Institute, and the Rappahannock Garden Club. Students plant and harvest fruit and vegetables; landscape around the school grounds; build structures for the garden areas, and visit local sustainable farms to learn about crops and methods. In addition to eating, cooking, and selling what they grow, students share their produce with clients of the Rappahannock Senior Nutrition Center (photo, left). Contact Trista Scheuerlein for more information.

NEXT STEP, the Rappahannock College & Career Access Program, in partnership with RCPS faculty and staff, guidance professionals, and community members, makes sure all students have the resources they need to create and carry out the college, vocational, or career plan that’s right for them. Next Step Director Miranda Hope provides one-on-one advising to students and their families regarding applications and financial aid on-site at Rappahannock County High School. See www.RappahannockDreams.com for online information about preparation, applications, and financial aid for college, trade schools, and other ways to continue your education after high school. Next Step is made possible in part through the generous support of the Verizon Foundation.

STARFISH MENTORING fosters one-on-one mentoring relationships in which trained adult volunteers meet regularly with Rappahannock County youth, ages 6 - 18, to act as caring, nurturing role models. With the support of their mentors, children in the Starfish program learn to accomplish important goals such as learning to swim or applying to college, gain life skills such as cooking or playing an instrument, and are introduced to expanded world views by activities such as attending museums or concerts or going to summer camp. Most children in the Starfish program have chosen to continue meeting with their mentor for at least two years, with many pairs still going strong after five years. Community sponsors include Armfield Miller & Ripley, Country Places Realty, Frank Hardy Realty Inc., Piedmont Property, Rappahannock National Bank, The Rappahannock News, Rappahannock Real Estate Resources, Real Estate III, Sam Snead Realty, Strange & Co. Realtors, and The Verizon Foundation. Contact Ann Baumgardner for more information about Starfish.
